The spark gap should be approximately 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch.
A manometer is needed to test the gas pressure. The pressure should be within the range specified in the cooktop's service manual, typically around 4 inches of water column for natural gas.
The gas shut-off valve is typically located behind the cooktop, either in the cabinet underneath or on the wall nearby. It's a yellow or black handle attached to the gas supply pipe.
The cooktop's main control unit (MCU) sends 120V AC to the igniter module when a burner knob is turned on. The igniter module then generates a high-voltage spark at the electrode near the burner. This spark ignites the gas flowing from the burner ports. A failure in any part of this circuit can prevent ignition. The MCU also monitors safety sensors. A lack of flame within a certain timeframe will shut off the gas to prevent accumulation.
The homeowner observes that the Whirlpool cooktop burners are clicking repeatedly when the knob is turned, but the gas is not igniting, and there is concern about a potential gas leak.
Always disconnect power to the cooktop at the breaker panel before performing any repairs. Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedures must be followed. Natural gas is flammable and explosive. Ensure adequate ventilation when working on gas appliances. High voltage is present during ignition; exercise caution when testing live circuits.
Regularly clean the burner ports to prevent blockage. Wipe down the cooktop surface after each use to remove food debris. Inspect the igniter electrodes for damage during cleaning. Annually check the gas connections for leaks using soapy water.
Some Whirlpool cooktops have a diagnostic mode. Press and hold the Oven Light and Bake buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to enter the service mode. This may display error codes related to the ignition system.
