Check for smooth, quiet rotation. A bad idler pulley will be noisy, stiff, or wobbly.
Refer to your dryer's model number and consult the parts list. The belt should be the correct length and width.
Overloading the dryer, a seized idler pulley, excessive lint buildup, and incorrect belt installation can all shorten the life of a dryer belt.
The dryer belt connects the motor to the drum, transferring rotational force. The belt wraps around the drum and a motor pulley, and a tensioner pulley (idler pulley) keeps the belt tight. A broken or slipped belt means the drum won't turn, preventing the clothes from drying.
The dryer is running, but the drum is not turning. The dryer may be making a loud squealing or thumping noise.
Always unplug the dryer from the outlet before performing any repairs. The dryer contains high voltage components that can cause electric shock.
Clean the lint filter after every load. Annually inspect the dryer belt and pulleys for wear and tear. Vacuum out any accumulated lint from the dryer's interior.
Before installing the new belt, check the idler pulley for smooth rotation. A seized or stiff idler pulley can cause premature belt failure. Apply a small amount of high-temperature grease to the idler pulley bushing if needed.
