The standpipe should be at least 30 inches high and no more than 96 inches high.

Washers use a pump to expel water during the drain cycle. However, if the drain hose creates a siphon due to improper height or insertion depth in the standpipe, gravity will continuously pull water out of the tub, overriding the normal fill and wash cycles.
